A new future for Palliative Care in our community

A new future for Totara House

Totara House the home of Totara Hospice south auckland is now eleven years old. It has been recognised for some time, there is a growing need for a larger and updated facility which caters for the growing community and in-house palliative care requirements of patients and their families. The decision was made by Totara Hospice south auckland Board of Trustees to create a plan, ensuring these needs were met by expanding the existing facilities to provide a “fit for purpose” building which met the ongoing medical and care responsibilities provided by Totara Hospice.

Since 2006 the need of Palliative Care in our community has become greater, and working with our advisers we are now able to commence a building redevelopment that future proofs Totara House for the next decade and beyond.

The redevelopment will cost a total of $6.75 million, including $3 million for the new wing, $1.9 million to reorder and refurbish the existing facility, $415,000 for additional Ambulatory Care facilities, and a new Sanctuary/Chapel. Approximately $450,000 will be required for fit out – including upgraded kitchen/catering and laundry facilities.

Given the urgent need for the commencement of this project, the Board of The Totara Foundation has set aside up to $1.8 million from reserves and specific bequests in partially funding this redevelopment project. The remaining $4.95 million will be sought from charitable trusts/foundations, sponsored dedications, bequests and public fundraising within the South and South East Auckland community.

The new capacity will enable us to accommodate the expected increase in patient needs from the current 1095 to in excess of 1400 per annum over the next 5 years, and facilitate the expansion of our service to embrace those groups under-represented in our community.
